This tutorial series is for anyone who wants to learn how to create a WordPress theme.

There are some people asking whether they should learn how to create themes or plugins first. I suggest themes because it’s much more simpler to understand.

Before Getting Started

Before you begin this series, I expect you to have a good understanding of HTML, CSS and web design. This tutorial will not teach you how to design, but it’ll teach you how to create a WordPress theme. You must also have an understanding of PHP fundamentals.

While this tutorial doesn’t expect you to know how to code any themes or plugins, you should know how to use WordPress in general. This includes stuff like creating posts, pages, uploading a themes, and creating menus.

What do I need?

You’re free to use any text editor you like. For this tutorial series, I’ll be using Komodo Edit. Click here to download this program. You should also have a local server installed. You can use XAMPP, WAMP or USBWebServer. You should also have WordPress installed. Any version of WordPress 3.x will work. At this moment, feel free to add some random posts and create pages. If you’re having trouble or don’t feel like abusing your keyboard, then head on over to Lorem Ipsum to generate random content. Click here to go to the Lorem Ipsum website.

I’ll be providing all source code, images and any other files related to this project. If you have your own design, then this tutorial assumes you have already converted it from a PSD to a fully HTML validated file.  Your design should be well structured code wise.
